Roberts heads for Doncaster loan

Wolves youngster Tyler Roberts will spend the 2023/24 campaign on loan at League Two side Doncaster Rovers.

The move will see Roberts venture away from Compton Park for the first time in his 12 years at the club.

After initially joining the academy’s foundation phase, Roberts progressed through the ranks and turned professional in 2021. He recently signed a contract extension with the Old Gold until at least the summer of 2025.

The 19-year-old winger continued his development at Wolves with the under-21s throughout the 2022/23 season and was rewarded at international level in March, as he made his senior debut for Jamaica alongside Dexter Lembikisa.

Roberts will now head to the Eco-Power Stadium and link up with newly appointed boss Grant McCann, who has returned for a second spell in the Rovers hotseat and will be hoping to improve on the 18th place finished they recorded last time out.

Strategic player marketing manager, Matt Jackson, said: “Tyler’s gaining experience at a very good club with a manager who has done a lot of homework on him and has been very active in his recruitment process, which is great from our perspective, and that’s credit to Doncaster and Grant McCann.

“It’s a really good set-up and we expect them to be very competitive in that league this season, so the independence Tyler will have by going into a new club and the maturity he will gain from it will be excellent for his long-term future.”

A first season in senior football awaits Roberts, who has been progressing through the Wolves youth ranks since he joined the club as a nine-year-old, and Jackson is hoping the winger settles in well to life in the EFL.

“For any player to make their league debut is a special occasion, so we hope he will be able to accomplish that,” Jackson added.

“He’s developed really well in recent years, he has an outstanding asset in his exceptional pace that we hope he can utilise, and we also want him to round off other elements of his game, which like all young players need development.

“The way players adapt to a new team is always different, but we have experience of seeing how the other lads have coped in recent seasons, so it’s going to be good test for him.

“We’re going to monitor him carefully and Doncaster will look after him well, but, like all players, he’s going to have to deal with a pressure that comes from playing multiple games in a season at really high intensity, and when you’re in the dressing room, you have to deliver the results.”
