Nunes’ journey to Wolves

As Matheus Nunes begins the latest chapter of his career at Molineux, wolves.co.uk takes us back in time to the high points of the midfielder’s time in the game so far.

Born in Brazil, and once of Estoril, Nunes flourished in the Portuguese capital at Sporting CP, where he won four honours and earned recognition for the Portugal national team.

Now, we take a look back at the 23-year-old’s career to date, which features a selection of familiar old gold faces along the way and now, of course, they’re reunited at Molineux.

24th September 2020 | Playing European football for Sporting. Nunes tries to unpick the Aberdeen defence in a Europa League qualifying clash in Lisbon during his maiden years in the game.

23rd January 2021 | A first honour for Nunes, who celebrates Sporting’s Taca da Liga win, after they defeated Braga 1-0 in the 2021 final.

11th May 2021 | The league and cup double in the bag. Nunes in the thick of the celebrations as Sporting are crowned Primeira Liga champions at the end of the 2020/21 season.

31st July 2021 | The trophies keep on coming. Nunes lifts the Portuguese Super Cup after Sporting defeated Braga in the final to collect their third piece of silverware of 2021.

28th September 2021 | A young Nunes gets stuck into Axel Witsel of Borussia Dortmund during a Champions League clash in Germany.

9th October 2021 | After opting to represent Portugal over Brazil, Nunes makes his senior international debut in a 3-0 friendly win over Qatar.

11th November 2021 | The pack together. Nunes joins Nelson Semedo and Goncalo Guedes together as Portugal line up ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Republic of Ireland.

24th November 2021 | In Champions League action, Nunes competes with Borussia Dortmund’s Emre Can – a game the Portuguese side came out on top in with a 3-1 win.

24th March 2022 | An international goal scorer. Nunes celebrates with his teammates after his first senior Portugal goal in their World Cup play-off against Turkey.

24th March 2022 | On their way to Qatar, Nunes and Portugal’s record appearance maker and goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo embrace after nearing the World Cup with victory over Turkey.

2nd June 2022 | All smiles on Portugal duty, Nuno joins Guedes and a host of Portuguese teammates after a Nations League goal against Spain in the summer.

24th July 2022 | Enjoying the Jose Alvalade Stadium, Nunes steps out at the home of Sporting for a pre-season Cinco Violinos Trophy meeting with Sevilla.

30th July 2022 | Less than one month ago, Nunes was lining up against his future club, competing with Leander Dendoncker in a pre-season friendly out in Faro.

13th August 2022 | The swansong. Nunes celebrates his final Sporting goal, in his final game at the weekend, after his stunning strike against Rio Ave.

17th August 2022 | Welcome to the pack. Nunes arrives at Compton Park ahead of his new chapter with Wolves in the Premier League.
