On This Day: November Edition

The November Edition of Wolves' History

20th November 1986: Wolves sign Steve Bull and Andy Thompson

Wolves, in the depths of the fourth division, made a double signing from local rivals West Bromwich Albion. The transfer of Steve Bull and Andy Thompson was confirmed on the 20th of November 1986 for a combined fee close to £65,000. This would be an inspirational signing with the pair racking up a combined 1,012 appearances. Bully and Thommo would play pivotal roles in helping the club return from the depths of the Fourth Division, and also played key roles in the Sherpa Van Trophy win in 1988.

10th November 1876: First meeting of Goldthorn Football Club

On the contrary to common belief that Wolverhampton Wanderers was founded in 1877, the club actually met for the first time on the 10th of November 1876 at St Luke’s School. There was a strong turnout to the meeting organised by John Brodie and John Bayton and members agreed to play under the name of the St Luke’s Football Club (as many of the players went to St. Luke’s school). In January 1877 St. Luke’s played their first game – the reason behind the belief that Wolves was founded in 1877.

3rd November 1888: Harry Wood scores Wolves’ first hat-trick

Harry Wood became the first of eighty-seven Wolves players to score a hat-trick as he scored in a 4-1 win against Derby on the 3rd of November 1888 in front of 6,000 at Dudley Road. There has been a total of 193 Wolves hat-tricks, most recently coming from Diogo Jota in a 4-0 win against Espanyol on the 20th of February 2020.

12th November 1958: Wolves become one of the first British clubs to enter the European Cup

On the 12th of November 1958 Wolverhampton Wanderers hosted Schalke in their first game in the European Cup and played out a 2-2 draw. In the 1958/1959 season, Wolves became just the second English side to enter the competition, behind Manchester United who made their debut in the 1956/1957 season. Unfortunately, Wolves did not make it further than the first round after losing 4-3 on aggregate in their first season in the competition. However, Wolves would go on to make it to the quarter finals the following season.
