Wolves 2 (Daniëls 46, Filis 81) Bristol City 1 (Syme 63)
Goals from Yana Daniëls and Mel Filis inspired Wolves Women to a 2-1 victory over Bristol City in the Subway Players’ Cup at the SEAH Stadium.
Despite Emily Syme’s response in the 63rd minute, the Old Gold were able to avenge last week’s defeat at Ashton Gate as they moved up to 12th in the table.
The opening stages of the game saw chances at both ends of the pitch as Abbi Jenner’s long throw bounced into the path of Louanne Worsey, who forced a save from Francesca Bentley, before Emily Orman was called into action as Rio Hardy raced through on goal.
The Wolves goalkeeper had started the game well as a move from the visitors saw the ball find the path of Emma Bissell, whose low effort was parried away from danger.
As the first half progressed, chances were limited for both teams with the next key moment coming 10 minutes before half time, as Bissell was able to cut out a loose pass before chipping her long-ranged attempt onto the roof of the net.
Whilst Wolves had dealt with Bristol City’s attacking threat well, they were able to have attempts of their own before the break as Worsey’s effort was diverted behind before Abbi Jenner dragged her shot wide from the edge of the box.
Half-Time | Wolves 0-0 Bristol City
It took only 25 seconds for the deadlock to be broken as the Old Gold raced forward down the right wing as Worsey drilled a low ball across the face of goal to find Daniëls who slid to poke the ball into the back of the net.
However, the visitors drew level in the 63rd minute as Olivia Wos was able to play a ball over the top of the defence into the path of Syme, who finished her one-on-one into the bottom left-hand corner.
Momentum was with the visitors as Orman was called into action minutes after the equaliser, as Esther Morgan latched onto a loose ball inside the area before forcing the goalkeeper into a good save from her powerful effort.
The tempo of the game had risen as the half progressed as the Wanderers retook the lead in the 81st minute after Filis initially hit the crossbar from close range, before the ball was recycled and struck into the bottom corner.
The goal proved pivotal heading into the closing stages; however, the visitors thought that they had equalised in the final minute as Alexia Apostolakis headed into the back of the net from a free kick - but their celebrations were cut short as the defender was ruled to be offside.
