Dan McNamara was delighted after a commanding performance from his Wolves Women side in their latest WSL 2 clash.
Goals from Amber Hughes and Mel Filis before a penalty from Anna Morphet sealed all three points for the Old Gold in a 3-0 victory over Burnley at the SEAH Stadium.
After two goals within three minutes, a third goal from the skipper just before half-time ensured Wolves went into the break comfortably in control.
McNamara focused on the performance, the impact of home form, Amber Hughes and the team as a whole, the journey of Anna Morphet and the next fixture away to Ipswich.
On the performance
“Fantastic performance from the players. I thought we blew them away in that 15-minute period in the first half. I thought we were exceptional.
“Look we said at half-time, if we showed the right mentality going into the second-half, the game was dead.
“6 points from 9 to start a new season in the WSL2. What a group, I’ve been saying it for years, I've literally said it for years, they are amazing people.
“But look, it's six points, we've got more to go, more to get through and I'm looking forward to the next challenge.”
On the impact of home form
“I showed the girls a stat yesterday, 745 days since we lost here. That's the kind of record that will help us achieve what we need to achieve this year.
“We want to build on it, we want it to become a fortress. Records are there to be broken and at some point it will get broken but I’m really proud of that, over 2 years of not losing a league game at home is brilliant.”
“I'm just delighted. Delighted for the fans, who turned out in their numbers tonight, a really good, exciting environment for the players to help them through the tough moments.”
On Amber Hughes and the team as a whole
“She’s done it at this level before, people forget she was in the Women's Championship with Coventry, then she came here 5 years ago, and has scored a ridiculous amount of goals
“I don't think anyone ever doubted would she be able to make the step up, I certainly never doubted whether she'd be able to make the step up. And here we are, 3 games in, 2 goals to her name, and looking really sharp.”
“The performance is only as good as everybody. I thought Mel Lawley was terrific today, some of the deliveries into the box, with her running off the ball.
“Chloe and Holly in central midfield, what a relationship they've developed, and even the subs that come on, the whole group were just fantastic. I'm just really pleased for them.”
On the journey of Anna Morphet
“I told her years ago we’d get to this level together and I don’t know whether she truly believed it.
“But here she is now, flourishing, captain of Wolverhampton Wanderers Women in the WSL2, she’s living her dreams and I’m delighted to have helped her play a really small part in that.
“I thought she was terrific today, not just a goal, she strikes the ball so cleanly on penalties, but also the way she dug in, she wins headers, she's fantastic in possession, breaking lines, fantastic.”
On the next game away to Ipswich
“Totally different challenge, from Christmas last year Ipswich have had a right go at it. Some of the signings are superb household names at this level.
“New opponents, so we're really excited. We'll prepare well for it, as we do every week, and we'll go and see what we can get in Ipswich.”
