Dan McNamara was full of praise for his Wolves Women side after securing their first ever victory as a WSL2 club.
Spectacular strikes from Amber Hughes and Amy Sims before a composed finish from Yana Daniëls helped the Old Gold to a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United at the SEAH Stadium.
After the Blades halved the deficit just two minutes after the host’s second goal, the Belgian attacker was able to reduce any hope of a comeback inside the final 10 minutes of the game.
McNamara focused on the performance, the change in position of Amy Sims, the impact of the substitutions, and the next fixture at home to Burnley.
On the performance
“I thought the girls were magnificent. I thought they were absolutely unbelievable today.
“The way they've taken on the information this week, the way they've applied themselves in the right moments, the way they've just won duels, put their bodies on the line.
“In front of our fans, let's not kid ourselves, it's such an important game so early on in the season, I think it's credit to them. I thought they were brilliant and I'm just so proud of them.”
On the position change of Amy Sims
“I've battled for a long time with Amy Sims in derby colours and I've seen her play that position year on year and be the best full-back in the division and obviously the last couple of years haven’t gone right the way she wanted it to do with regards to getting promoted and not getting that opportunity.
“But, what a player. If she's not WSL2 level, then I'm not too sure what is. She's adapted to it superbly.
“She's playing, as you said, in a position where it's probably not her favoured position, if you like.
“But when she's doing so well and she's marking players of Amy Andrews and competing and not letting her get much out of the game, then she's not doing herself any favours to move anywhere else.
“But what a goal, what a finish. And she's got that in her locker as well, which is brilliant for a full-back to have.”
On the impact of the substitutions
“I don't mind 3-1. It sounds weird, but 2-0 is a horrible scoreline. All of a sudden they get back into it and it's nerves, backs against the wall.
“But I thought we showed real quality, real character. And look, I've asked the subs to try and be good subs.
“I know it's not a nice thing to do, but can you be a good substitution and come on and impact the game?”
On the next game at home to Burnley
“You get promoted so you don't play the same teams and then within three weeks, we're hosting them.
“Burnley are absolutely ready. They'll want to come and get their first win under their belt. It's always a great occasion when Burnley come to town or we go up there.
“It'll be a feisty, competitive game and we're really looking forward to it. So hopefully we can build on this and take it into next week.”
