Wolves Women were cruising to a convincing win in their penultimate pre-season friendly at Wrexham on Thursday night before weather conditions led to the abandonment of the fixture
Amber Hughes, Tammi George, Louanne Worsey and Ellen Jones’ efforts storm into a 4-0 lead at the break against the Welsh champions before severe thunder and lightning caused the match to end at half-time.
With the WSL 2 season edging ever closer, Dan McNamara will be using the final two pre-season fixtures in the schedule to help decide his opening day starting XI, and things could not have got off to a better start as Hughes struck early on.
Worsey, who tormented the Wrexham left side throughout, delivered a deep cross into the six-yard box, where the striker neatly volleyed home.
She could have doubled her tally as Jones won possession back deep inside the Wrexham half before Hughes unleashed a left-footed effort just wide.
Welsh international Olivia Francis then turned on the pace to react to Abbi Jenner’s lofted ball, seeing her effort saved by Lucy Farrell in the Wrexham goal.
Jenner’s repeat of that pass would prove fruitful as George raced onto the cushioned ball, taking a couple of touches before lifting the ball over Farrell for 2-0 just after a quarter of an hour.
In a flash it was 3-0 as Hughes took Jones’ flick on forward before finding Worsey in acres of space inside the six-yard box for her to tap home.
The two combined again before half-an-hour had struck the clock, Worsey taking a first time effort from the lay-off to fire just wide from the edge of the box.
Alex Brooks, though quiet in the first period, was then needed to be alert as Jamaican international Natasha Thomas forced her into a fingertip save.
Wolves rounded off a prolific first half as Jones earned her goal with a close range finish as Worsey’s delivery was deflected into her path by Becky Anderson.

Half-time brought an end to proceedings, with severe thunder and lightning over North Wales and the Midlands meaning safety protocols were implemented. With no end in sight to the conditions, it was decided that the match would be abandoned by the referee.
