Beth Merrick retires from football

Beth Merrick has retired from football after more than 20 years in the game, bringing an end to a memorable career with her childhood club.

Finishing her playing time as a FA WNL Play-Off champion that saw Wolves promoted to the Women’s Super League 2 – and professional football – for the first time in their history, Merrick leaves a lasting legacy in Old Gold and will be remembered as a player who gave her all for the badge throughout her time at the club.

A North Bank season ticket holder, the 30-year-old is Wolves through and through, finishing her career with 163 appearances and 62 goals – her last of which came on the final day of the regular season in a 3-0 win against Halifax.

Initially joining Wolves’ centre of excellence at the tender age of seven, Merrick’s talent shone bright from an early age, and she even went on to play in the same under-10 side as Jade and Emma Cross.

Soon snapped up by Super League outfit Aston Villa, the winger played at every youth level for England between under-17s and under-23s and was a highly decorated player during her time away from Wolves, but Merrick made the decision to drop down from second tier of women’s football and return to the club in June 2021.

Merrick’s final act as a Wolves Women player was to help her beloved club back into the second tier, with the long-deserved WSL 2 promotion finally secured with victory in the FA Women’s National League Play-Off.

She can also stake her name to the FA WNL Northern Premier Division title in 2021/22 as well as two Birmingham FA Challenge Cup titles, having played a crucial role with her unwavering performances and crucial goals from wide positions.

But Merrick’s name will mostly be remembered for her FA Cup heroics in gold and black, with the winger being the scorer of Wolves Women’s first ever goal on live television as she struck what would soon become known as a ‘Merrick special’, cutting in from the right to deliver a top-corner finish against Stoke City live in front of the TNT Sports cameras in November 2025.

A dedicated servant to a club which means so much to her, Merrick has etched her name into the Wolves history books thanks to her incredible five-year senior tenure.

Manager Dan McNamara said: “When we first signed Beth five years ago, she was a player I’d always admired and what she has done in her career was phenomenal. But most of all she is a Wolves fan and we know what this club meant to her - which is why we tried so hard to bring her in.

“Since she’s been here, she has been an unbelievable person and player and has added to the group in so many ways. She’s loved by all of us - staff, players and supporters - and really endeared herself to the whole club.

“She won’t mind me saying she’s been difficult at times and very opinionated and someone who has tested and challenged me, but that is all part of having two people who are so passionate about the same thing. The drive she brought to this club is why she is a fantastic person and a brilliant player.

“When we went up, Beth was one of those players who didn’t really have an appetite to leave her full-time job. She has probably achieved everything that she wanted now. We’re going to miss her experience and quality and definitely her character in and around the dressing room, but what a fairytale ending this season has been for her - taking her girlhood club into the professional game.

“This whole squad will be remembered as the one that made history to bring professional women’s football to Wolves, but Beth is someone whose goals we will be watching for years to come on highlights reels. How often have we seen that trademark strike we all love? Beth, we wish you all the best and every success for whatever is next for you. But most of all, thank you.”

Everyone at Wolves would like to thank Beth for the memories she has given the football club and wish her well for the future. See you in the North Bank!
