Women's Preview | Promotion Play-Off

Wolves Women’s season comes to an end on Monday with one final push for WSL 2 as they take on Plymouth Argyle in the FA WNL Tier 3 Promotion Play-Off.

After a second place finish for both sides in the regular season, Wolves take on their Southern Division counterparts at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium looking to secure professional league status for the first time in the club’s history.

Setting the Scene

Wolves did what they needed to do on the final day of the season, winning 3-0 against Halifax at the SEAH Stadium thanks to goals from Beth Merrick, Amber Hughes and Amy Sims, but Burnley’s win against Stoke meant Dan McNamara’s side had to settle for second spot.

Plymouth were also victorious on the final day, coming from a goal down against Real Bedford to win 4-1 on the road. Second spot for Argyle was secured two weeks ago after other results went their way, though they still finished only a point behind champions Watford.

The Opposition

Last summer saw a period of transition for Argyle, securing safety in the third tier by just one point before appointing former Stoke City manager and Ireland international goalkeeper Marie Hourihan as their new Head Coach.

With the sternest defences in the Southern Division, Argyle conceded just 11 league goals – only one more than Wolves – and also reached the final of the FA WNL Cup where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by AFC Bournemouth.

Forward Una Lue leads Argyle’s scoring charts this season have accumulated 17 goals in total, either side of her December move from Cheltenham Town, while Tianna Teisar (13), Ellie Noble (12), Olivia Francis (10), Phoebe Poole (10)  and Charlotte Whitmore (10) have all notched double figures in green and white.

A notable result for the Devonians this season was their last minute 2-1 win at Bournemouth to put them in the driving seat for that second spot and they have scored at least five goals in a league game on four separate occasions.
