Wolves Women have secured their second addition of the summer following the arrival of prolific forward Charlotte Greengrass.
The 24-year-old has put pen-to-paper with the Old Gold following her departure from Nottingham Forest, where she scored over 50 goals in a four-year spell with the Reds.
A double winner at the City Ground in the 2022/23 season, Greengrass scored 22 goals as Forest clinched the Northern Premier Division title, on goal difference ahead of Wolves, as well as the FAWNL Cup.
Previously a defender, Greengrass has Championship experience with both Leicester City and Aston Villa and joined Forest in September 2020, where she made the transition into a centre forward two years ago.
Greengrass spent 10 years at Leicester, progressing through their RTC in her youth before signing for Aston Villa in the summer of 2019 and then onto Forest a year later.
A former England youth international, Greengrass scored a further 15 goals in all competitions last season as Forest finished three points above Wolves in third place.
Manager Dan McNamara has expressed his delight at sealing a statement signing and said: “This is a huge signing for us, to sign a player of Charlotte’s quality from our rivals. She couldn’t make their new model fit at Forest and as soon as we knew Charlotte was available, I wanted to touch base as soon as possible.
“Having spent so many years planning on how to stop her, it’s really refreshing and exciting for us now to be planning on how to get the best out of her. She’s a player we know a lot about and she’s caused us endless amounts of problems over the years and her qualities speak for themselves - her goal record over the last few years has been remarkable. Hopefully Charlotte can come in and play her part in adding some more goals to that front unit.”
And it is not only her numbers in front of goal that has attracted McNamara to Greengrass, as her work ethic and character off the field was also an important factor for the manager.
“We knew she had a lot of interest from other clubs, as you’d expect,” McNamara continued. “Her qualities are there for everyone to see and her goal scoring record is phenomenal at this level – she knows where the back of the net is.
“It’s also her work ethic that attracts me. I’ve seen the way she works hard on the pitch and she wants to work hard without the ball, often creating her own moments during games due to her ability to press and go with real intensity.
“It’s always strange when you’re coming in from a local rival who you’ve spent so long competing against. I can remember when we first took her around the training ground and a few of the girls were looking over and trying to work out whether it was Charlotte Greengrass.
“Straight away, you can see what kind of person she is. She’s a fantastic person, has a great personality and she’s started to embed herself really well into the group. She’s full of life, has character and is very confident which is a very good trait to have. I’m sure she’s going to bring plenty of experience even at the young age she is. She’ll add a lot to the dressing room and we’re really excited to see what impact that will have on the players.”
McNamara admits the club had to act swiftly and smartly in order to secure the signature of Greengrass, but doesn’t want to play down the fact that the dressing room at Wolves and success of the club in recent years is something incoming players are keen to be a part of.
“Getting someone of Charlotte’s quality is always a bonus. We look at what the other clubs are doing in and around the league, and we know we’ve got to do things a little bit different.
“When players like Charlotte become available, we’ve got to move quickly, work smartly and make sure they’re interested in the club. She was impressed with what we’re trying to do in the parameters we’ve been set and, also, she wants to go and work with the girls.
“Over the last few years, we’ve proved we’ve got some of the best individuals within tier three. The likes of Anna Morphet, Katie Johnson, Tammi George, who have all had interest over the summer – those kind of players are who players coming in want to play with and work hard with.
“As important as it was, it’s great to see her pick Wolves over someone else. We’re really excited for what this season will bring and hopefully Charlotte can hit the ground running heading into this weekend.”
