Solihull beaten in the cup

Solihull United Ladies 1 (Smith 4) Wolves Women 6 (own goal 3, Walker 9 & 81, Palmer 60, Keitley 62, Dicken 84)

Wolves Women progressed into the fourth round of the Birmingham FA Women’s County Cup with an impressive display away at Solihull United Ladies.

Wolves took the lead through an own goal following a mix-up in the Solihull defence before conceding straight from kick-off as Laura Smith converted a penalty to draw the hosts level within a minute.

It was not long before Wolves regained the lead, however. Lowri Walker found herself with space inside the box as she headed home from close range in the ninth minute.

A dry period followed as Wolves dominated possession but struggled in the final third against a resilient Solihull defence.

It took until the hour mark for Wolves to get their third. Jamila Palmer capitalised on a defensive mistake and slotted home from the edge of the box under little pressure.

The fourth was added shortly after as Alice Keitley got in on the act, the forward firing a powerful shot up and over Katy Pearce in the Solihull goal.

Walker bagged her second with nine minutes left to play before Amy Dicken scored the final goal of the afternoon to condemn Solihull to defeat.

QUOTES

Dan McNamara was pleased with his side’s professionalism but said he was glad the game was over.

“It’s a difficult competition to be involved in because you never know what to expect. Today we weren’t on the best surface, but I was pleased with the professionalism of the girls who got the job done today.”

“We said at half-time we need a little more quality, we were getting the ball into the final third but once we got there, we were lacking composure. So, we said we need to be more composed in and around the box and in the second half, we were. Having said that, I’m glad it’s over.”
