Wolves Women continued their impressive form to stay top of Women’s Division 1 Midlands league with a 6-0 derby win over Sporting Khalsa Women.
Wolves flew out of the blocks and were ahead after just two minutes as Lindsey Glover fired in a strike from an acute angle.
That moment seemed to be a signal for what lay ahead as Wolves continued their early pressure and their second came from the spot 15 minutes later. Cortney Jones was brought down just inside the box and Jamila Palmer converted confidently.
The game sparked into life once again ten minutes before the break as Palmer grabbed her second of the match with a fantastic strike which the keeper couldn’t handle.
More of the same followed early in the second-half as Lowri Walker turned nicely in the box and struck well into the corner to put more daylight between the two sides.
Jade Cross was lively all evening for Wolves once again and nearly grabbed the fifth following a fantastic solo run, but her effort was saved and smashed home from Andrea Barnett.
Cross finally got her goal 15 minutes from the end as she chased down the goalkeeper’s clearance, only for it to bounce of her into the net.
Moment of the match
Palmer’s 25-yarder strike just before the break put Wolves in a commanding position going into half-time. Although Khalsa’s keeper got a touch, the shot was always looked destine for the back of the net.
Manager quotes
Dan McNamara was impressed with his side’s versatility in an important derby match.
He said: “It’s always a tough one coming into a derby, especially against Khalsa as we knew what they were going to bring. They’re tenacious, they don’t stop and they’ve got quality all over the pitch. It was a big one for us tonight and I think the girls have done themselves proud. It was a complete performance on our part.
“We always talk about playing with intelligence and adapting to what the other team are doing. We are very capable of keeping the ball and playing nice passes, but we are also capable of clipping it behind and hurting teams that way with the quality that we have up front. We have plenty of things in our locker and we adapted well and battled when we had to.”
