Despite being on the back foot for most of the game, Wolves dug in deep and frustrated a good Blackburn side.

After an even start to the game, in which there was very little in terms of goalmouth action, it was the hosts who took the lead through Andrea Whetton.

She picked the ball up on the right and looked to pick out Jade Cross in the middle of the box, but her cross-come-shot looped over the head of Danielle Hill in the Blackburn goal and over the line, hitting the post on its way in.

Blackburn then began to take the game to Wolves, twice coming close from corners as well as striker, Natasha Flint, missing several chances.

Wolves then almost doubled their lead through Mai Butler. A counter-attack ended in the hosts winning a corner, Butler rose highest to meet the ball but her header cannoned back off the crossbar.

The second-half began with the visitors on top and their pressure soon resulted in them pulling level. A corner was swung in from the right and, after a scramble in the box, the ball was eventually bundled home by Lynda Shepherd.

The game continued to be contested well by both teams and, despite a lot of pressure from the visitors, Wolves ensured they were limited to shots from distance.

Jade Cross almost gave Wolves all three points when she rounded the goalkeeper, but her shot was cleared off the line.

Undeterred by wave after wave of Blackburn attacks, Wolves held firm and were able to claim a very good point.

Wolves Women Manager Dan McNamara said: “It was a great performance today against a very good Blackburn side. We dug deep, defended well and battled for the point.”
