Wolves Women 0-3 The New Saints Ladies
Wolves Women suffered their first league defeat of the season at their Hednesford Town ground after a second half meltdown which saw them concede three goals in the space of 20 minutes.
Wolves were slow to get into the game with their first chance not coming until the 15th minute as Jade Cross’s shot from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by the keeper.
The New Saints started to put pressure on their hosts and in the 22nd minute sent in a long range shot from 30 yards out which forced a fantastic save from Lucy Gardner in the Wolves goal, pushing the ball onto the post.
Wolves started to create chances of their own, most notably in the 28th minute when the ball was played into Amber Quick who found herself one on one with the keeper, but her shot was saved.
Laura McQuilkin came close five minutes later as her speculative cross hit the crossbar, but neither side could make the breakthrough and the half finished goalless.
The New Saints wasted no time in the second half in getting on the scoresheet, as Emily Ridge got behind the Wolves back line and found herself one on one with Gardner in the Wolves goal, chipping the ball in to put the visitors ahead.
Wolves were trying to find the equaliser but were unable to create any clear cut chances. They suffered a further blow in the 54th minute when they gave away a penalty and Charlotte Canlett slotted home to make it 2-0 to the visitors.
Wolves were then fighting hard to get themselves back into the game, trying to find the comeback spirit which they had shown to good effect in previous games. Laura McQuilkin’s free-kick led to a goalmouth scramble, but Wolves weren’t able to capitalise.
Their miserable day was completed when an intercepted backpass was picked up by Ridge, who rounded the keeper to score her second and a third goal for TNS, condemning Wolves to their first defeat of the season.
They will be hoping to get back to winning ways next Sunday 25th September when they entertain Leicester City Ladies at Hednesford Town FC at 2pm. Admission is £2 or £1 for concessions.
