Peixoto | 'It was an amazing job from the lads'

Cesar Peixoto was delighted with the way his Wolves team performed in their 3-0 win over Cardiff City as three headed goals secured all three Championship points at Molineux.

Having seen his team dominate but not take full advantage in front of goal during their last few outings, Peixoto’s side were fully in control against the Bluebirds with two early goals through the returning Fer Lopez and Adam Armstrong, who has two in two after his winner against Watford last weekend.

Ladislav Krejci added a third in the second half to round out the victory, but with two away games to come next week, leading into the international break, Peixoto knows his team need to celebrate quickly before turning their attention if they want to continue their fine form.

On a big win at Molineux

“The players followed the game plan amazingly well in the first half. We knew Cardiff were going to press us high, man-to-man, with their full-back going to press Trippier. We adapted by putting Trippier a little deeper to attract their players and then tried to exploit the spaces in behind and I believe we did that very, very well.

“We changed the rhythm at the right moments and we also knew that if we pressed them high, their centre-backs would spread very wide, and we could create chances from that. We won a lot of balls high up the pitch in the first half and until we went 3-0 up, I think the team played very well.

“We played with courage, changed the rhythm, played faster when we needed to and kept the ball when we needed to and after the third goal, we played a little deeper than I wanted, but it was important to manage the players’ minutes and manage the game at 3-0.

“It was an amazing job from the lads, and it’s a good victory for us, but in three days we have another game, and we need all the players.”

On turning chances into goals

“I said before that when we start to produce chances, the goals will come. We have to give the players confidence and sometimes players go through moments when they’re not scoring, but that doesn’t mean they lose their quality.

“We’ve worked with Rafiki on attacking the box and making runs towards the second post and we’ve shown him individual videos because sometimes he attacks the box too early and moves towards one side, but today, he waited a little longer, stayed more central in the box and scored.

“We brought on Mane and Rodrigo, two fast players on the wings, because we knew Cardiff would try to come forward and leave more space in behind. We had another two chances to score from those situations but we managed the game well.

“These are important details for us, but it’s only three points. It was a good game and an important victory at home. The players did an amazing job and now we have to recover because we have another game.”

On sending the supporters home happy

“The crowd today was amazing. The atmosphere in the stadium was perfect.

“We brought the supporters with us, and they were happy with the performance, so thank you to the supporters because we work for them.”

On starting Lopez on the right of the front three

“Bellegarde was ill during the week and he missed two training sessions as he wasn’t 100 per cent ready to play, Rodrigo is also coming back from injury, and Mane doesn’t play in exactly the same way on the right as he does on the left.

“But I liked what I saw in the last game when we had Jordan James, Marshall and Andre in midfield, and I think that made us stronger, so today, we started with Fer in a wider position, but when he comes inside, he has more freedom and I think that was important for us today.

“Fer has played in that position many times, and although I prefer to have him more inside, sometimes you have to look at what’s best for the team rather than the individual player and today, we needed him in the wide areas. He scored and did a great job.

“But the whole team played well, with more confidence on the ball. We created a lot of chances, changed the rhythm well and played with confidence.”

On Jordan James’ injury

“I don’t know [what the injury is] yet as I haven’t spoken to the medical department. He felt something during the week, but we did an examination and it didn’t show anything so we decided he could play.

“Today, he felt something again. I don’t know exactly what it is yet, but he had a little pain, and we didn’t want to take any risks by keeping him on.”
