Neave | ‘That’s why I came to Wolves’

Sean Neave said experiences like Friday’s win at Burnley – the first league start of his career – were the reason he joined Wolves.

The Newcastle United youngster was given his moment at Turf Moor with Raul Jimenez and Adam Armstrong out injured, and he made the most of it with an assist for the Old Gold’s crucial equaliser scored by Fer Lopez before the break.

That proved the catalyst for a crucial away win, and for Neave, who impressed overall from the start, he’s now hungry for more opportunities during his first loan in senior football.

On a strong full Championship debut

“That was a good moment in my career. My first start in the Championship, and to get an assist on top of that just sums up the moment. It was just top. Me and Fer were speaking about it before the game. We said we were going to assist each other, so we’ll see what happens. And then it happened, so I’m buzzing.

“My first thought was to try to get a shot off, but then I saw Fer in the corner of my eye. He was screaming at me, so I just squared it across to him. He did the rest from there. It was a top finish.”

On the reason he joined on loan

“The main aim of coming here was to get game time. To get my first start in the Championship and an assist on top of that is a really good moment for me. That’s why I came to Wolves, and hopefully there are many more moments like this to come during the season.

“It’s a long season and hopefully we can get to where we want to be, which is obviously promotion to the Premier League.

On the build up

“Obviously, I don’t wish an injury on anybody. But when Adam got injured, I was thinking to myself, ‘Okay, this is my chance. I need to take it.’ I hope Adam’s doing really well and that his back is fine. But for me, I need to be selfish in these kinds of moments and take my chance.”

On facing Vardy at Turf Moor

“When I was a young lad, he was the striker I loved watching. When I was playing, people used to compare me to Vardy because I had a similar playing style. He’s somebody I’ve looked up to throughout my career, really. Seeing him score goals like that just makes me want to push on and reach that level as well.”

On having family in the stand

“I had quite a few. My mum, my grandad and my best friend were here. It was a good moment, especially with them all watching.”

On kicking on now for the team

“Obviously, our form hasn’t been that good recently, but to bounce back like that is really good for the team. We just need to keep it up and take that into the next game, because the games are coming thick and fast.

“We need to go into the next game with a positive mentality, knowing we need to keep winning and keep going. And we’ll get there.”
