David Moller Wolfe has joined Hamburg on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day.
The 24-year-old signed for Wolves last summer and competed with Hugo Bueno for the left-back slot last season, making 26 appearances, 11 of which were Premier League starts.
The defender received opportunities in the cup competitions and scored twice against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, but his Premier League minutes decreased during the second part of the campaign.
Wolfe then returned late for pre-season following a successful World Cup campaign with Norway, while Bueno caught the eye of Cesar Peixoto during the summer.
The defender started the opening day against Blackburn Rovers and in the Carabao Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday, but now heads to the Bundesliga in search of regular football and Hamburg hold an option to make the move permanent next summer.
Technical director Matt Jackson: “It was a difficult balance to strike. David’s come back from a successful World Cup and Cesar has assessed the squad, and we’ve got two extremely good left backs. We have to get them both gametime and protect the value in them, and Wolfe going to play in the Bundesliga was the best for all parties.
“Hugo’s been excellent and is a homegrown player, which we’ve stressed many times is important. He’s started the season very well and we have to make decisions on the squad management.
“Every player wants to play, and Wolfie is definitely that type, and I respect him for that. He wants to be out there all of the time and is going to a massive club in Hamburg, where I’m sure he’ll do well. He’ll have our full support, as all our loan players always do.”
