Sheffield Wednesday 0 Wolves 2 (Swinkles OG 3, Olagunju 45+1)
A senior debut goal for Old Gold youngster Saheed Olagunju secured Wolves’ passage into the Carabao Cup third round at the expense of League One Sheffield Wednesday.
The visitors enjoyed the perfect start at Hillsborough as with their first attack of the match, Wolves opened the scoring. A great ball over the top of the Wednesday defence from Nasser Djiga was missed and after Tawanda Chirewa picked it up, he cut inside and his shot was parried by Joe Lumley off Sil Swinkles and into the net.
Wolves tried to add a second with chances falling the way of Adam Armstrong, who saw a couple of efforts blocked, while Jordan James came inches away from a debut goal when his shot from 20 yards flashed wide. The hosts pushed too, mainly through Harry Gray, who tested Jose Sa on several occasions without breaching the net.
Although Wednesday would have felt they should have gone into the break level with Gray coming close with a free-kick effort, it was the visitors who got the second and it came through debutant Olagunju. Tommy Doyle’s cross was missed by the defenders inside the box and the Wolves youngster made a great run to meet the ball with his head and directed it past Lumley from six yards out.

Taking a lead into the break, it was the visitors who had the best of the opportunities in the second period, with Boubacar Traore hitting an effort from 25 yards which fizzed its way towards goal before narrowly missing the target before Doyle found the side netting from a difficult angle.
Raul Jimenez was introduced midway through the half and within minutes of his arrival almost had the ball in the net, but his effort from 12 yards out took a deflection before heading wide. Wednesday substitute Louie Barry almost halved the deficit for his side with 15 minutes left when his curling shot from the left just missed the top corner of Sa’s goal.
A raft of substitutions towards the end of the game took the sting out of the tie, although the visitors came close to a consolation as the clock struck 90 when Jamal Lowe tried to beat Sa at his near post, but the man wearing the captain’s armband for the visitors kept it out and secured Wolves’ place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
