Wolves 2 (Munetsi 18) Blackburn Rovers 2 (McLoughlin 28, Gudjohnsen 48)
Raul Jimenez started his second coming at Molineux by earning Wolves a late point in their 2026/27 Championship opener against Blackburn Rovers.
Bringing a run of good form into the game following an impressive Carabao Cup win over Port Vale the previous week, Wolves took less than 20 minutes to open the scoring, as Marshall Munetsi was played in on goal by an incredible Fer Lopez sliding ball, and the midfielder showed great composure to fire past the onrushing Balazs Hoth.
Despite Wolves looking the strong of the two sides throughout the first half, Blackburn got themselves level just 10 minutes later when Ryoya Morishita got into space down the right and his cross was met by the head of Sean McLoughlin who guided his effort past Dan Bentley from close range.
The Old Gold would have felt disappointed not to have gone into the break in the lead, as good chances fell to the impressive Lopez and Mateus Mane, who both saw curling shots from 20 yards out narrowly miss the target, while Adam Armstrong and Andre also had shots blocked and Hoth almost fumbled a corner into his own net, but the keeper recovered at the last moment.
Half-time | Wolves 1-1 Blackburn
Despite Wolves’ chances at the end of the first half, Blackburn turned the game on its head just minutes into the second when Andri Gudjohnsen met an Oladapo Afolayan cross to give the visitors a shock lead.
Wolves pushed all they could for an equaliser, with Mane and Armstrong both firing wide, while Munetsi was denied a second when his shot on the turn was deflected past the post. The returning Jimenez fired a free-kick from a dangerous position over the crossbar while Bentley was also tested in the Wolves net as he tipped over a couple of long-range Blackburn efforts.
However, the headlines belonged to Jimenez, as he bailed Wolves out at the final moment of the game. With the game looking to be heading Blackburn’s way, Jackson Tchatchoua powered down the left before his cross hit the arm of Ryan Alebiosu in the box. Jimenez stepped up to the spot and sent Hoth the wrong way, securing a point for the Old Gold on the Championship opening day.
