Jackson | 'Andre very much wants to get us back'

Technical director Matt Jackson believes Andre’s new contract and commitment to staying at Molineux next season is a signal of intent from Wolves.

The club’s first move of the summer sees the key midfielder remain at Molineux for the rebuild next season, and the both the timing and positivity of the announcement are significant in Jackson’s eyes.

With a busy summer ahead at Compton Park, Andre’s future is now looked after, and it was the Brazilian’s commitment from early on which assured the club’s hierarchy that he was serious about staying and fighting next season.

On Andre’s new contract

“We’re delighted to have Andre as an integral part of our quest to get back into the Premier League as quickly as possible. It’s brilliant that he's bought into the project, and we’ve seen his professionalism, his quality shining through. He's still developing, but it's a brilliant commitment from him, and really a sign of the type of individual that he is.

“It's a big statement from us. I think it shows the intentions around the quality of player that we want to have at the football club, the way that we want to move forward, and having people that are settled here already is a huge part of that. They understand our culture, understand what we're trying to be, and have that individual talent to go with it.”

On his commitment to the club

“He went on record quite early, saying that he had that commitment to stay, and he's a man of his word. Once we got the contract structure sorted out, he very much wanted to get us back. He understands the responsibility of not just his own performances but helping us to build a team together. He's got those leadership qualities that we're crying out for, but obviously we also know that he's got the level to play in the Premier League as well, which is a huge bonus.

“He's a big character at the club. We probably see a slightly different version to him than perhaps our supporters do, he is a great character, and he's got a great sense of humour. The lads love him, and with a core group around him as well, I think he can really drive us forward.”

On the quick timing

“It's good timing for him personally, because he can go into a summer relaxed about his future. Regardless of how established you are as a professional, it's always nice to have that stability. He’s got that now for him and his family, and we have someone that, in the middle of the pitch in the Championship, should be absolutely top quality.

“It’s brilliant for him as an individual, that's the main part of it, but from the club's perspective, to have a player of top quality committing to us in this way is fantastic for everybody.”

On playing in the Championship

“He's got the mental makeup, the psychological makeup to go and actually perform in what's a really tough league. It might be slightly different standard wise to the Premier League, but the intensity and the physicality that's required to go into a 46-game season is something we have to account for, and in Andre we have someone that we have no doubts about.”

On a statement move

“It's huge. It's all very well us talking about the structure that we want, but it’s demonstrating it. I would like to think that we have other players around the playing staff that will look at that and understand that they can be part of something special, if we have one year in the Championship and then a nucleus of players that get promoted already have Premier League experience. I think they can make their careers flourish from there.

“From day one of pre-season, we want to have the intention going through the club that we are really serious about this. We want to be the very best that we can be.”
