Gomes | 'The next game is very important for us'

Rodrigo Gomes insists the Wolves players are going to do everything possible to end their difficult season with three points so not to finish bottom of the Premier League standings.

After having to settle for a point at home to Fulham on Sunday in Molineux’s final outing of the term, the Old Gold face Burnley at Turf Moor this weekend, where a win for the visitors will ensure they move ahead of the Clarets and into 19th.

With Gomes – who produced another exciting performance in the draw against the Cottagers – expected to be one of Rob Edwards’ current squad members to remain at the club following relegation, the Portuguese is determined to take as much positive momentum into next season as possible.

On aiming for 19th

“It was an important point [against Fulham], of course. We don’t want to finish in the bottom of the table, so it’s an important point.

“The next game is very important for us against Burnley, but we wanted so much to win. We gave everything, but unfortunately, we had to take the draw, but it’s better than a loss.

“I think the team did a good job, did a good work, and we were fighting to the end.”

On trying to win for the fans

“Of course we listen [to the fans], and we know that it’s been a difficult season for us and for them, but they’ve been amazing since the first game.

“They’ve been amazing, helping us, supporting us, away games, home games, and we did everything to win this game and to give them a win. Although we didn’t win, I think we tried hard, we tried everything.

“We know it’s been very difficult for them too this season, but we tried to win the game, we gave everything, but unfortunately, we didn’t get the win. But we are going to be working very hard this week to try and get the win against Burnley.”

On Edwards being the right man to get Wolves back up

“He has the right energy. When he came into the club, we were in a very difficult moment, and this season has been very difficult.

“We had a good momentum when we won against Aston Villa and Liverpool, and drew against Arsenal and Brentford, in that time, there was good momentum, and I think as players, we were playing very good, so we know we have the possibility to do that, and the club has the possibility to do that again next season.

“This is a very big club, and I know that the club is going to do everything to come back into the Premier League as fast as possible.”

On a big season ahead in the Championship

“Next season is going to be exciting because this season was not good for the club, and for me as well. I had a big injury, I didn’t play for a while, but I’m feeling good now.

“Like I said before, the club is very big and I know we’re going to do everything to come back as fast as possible, and if the club believes in me and if I stay, I will do everything to help the team come back up.”
