Kilman | 'It was very tough to take the defeat'

Maximilian Kilman insists Wolves still have plenty of areas to improve after succumbing to a second half come back from Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday lunchtime.

As well as admitting a need to be more solid in defence after the Old Gold leaked three goals after half time having taking a narrow lead into the break, the captain also believes the team being more clinical in front of goal when creating their own chances could have had a big impact on the second half game plan.

On falling to Liverpool fightback

“It was a very tough one to take. In the first half we were brilliant. We stuck to the game plan, pressed in the right areas, defended really well and created some good chances as well.

“We were dominant, we had some really good chances and we should have put away another goal and then it would have been a different game coming into the second half.

“But they were clinical in the second half and won the game in the end, so it was very tough to take the defeat today.”

On coming out strong at the start

“We definitely took them by surprise. We spoke about playing through the lines, beating their press, and getting into shape when we lost the ball in transition.

“All of that was very good, we stopped their counter-attacks and defended really well as a whole and were really good going forward.

“But it’s a game of two halves and in the second half, they took their chances.”

On a need to improve in both boxes

“It’s a bit of both. We should have taken more of our chances, but in the second half, when Liverpool start to dominate, we should have held up under the pressure, been a bit more ruthless defensively, and try to cut their chances out.

“Pedro [Neto] has been brilliant, Cunha’s played really good as well, but we just need to find a way to finish our chances and score more goals. But also, in the other half [of the pitch] we need to defend the box really well, so that will come but we need to look forward to the next game.”

On remaining positive

“There are positives to take, but there’s still a lot more to work on. We’ve got a really good squad. Gary’s come in and he’s doing a very good job. He came in quite late, so we’re still adapting to his way of playing.

“But we’ve got a lot of work to do. We need to improve because we should have been finishing the game in the second half, like we did in the first half, so we have plenty to work on to improve.

“We’ve had a tough start, so we’ve got to regroup, keep going and keep progressing and hopefully things will turn around.”
