Matheus Nunes has completed a club record transfer to Premier League champions Manchester City after one year at Molineux.
The Portuguese arrived at Wolves last August for a club record fee and played 39 times, both centrally and out wide, in what was his first season away from his home nation of Portugal.
One of five Wolves representatives at the 2022 World Cup in the winter, Nunes started nine of the final ten Premier League matches of the season, helping the Old Gold retain their Premier League status.
His stunning strike against Chelsea at Molineux in April, which earned three important points towards that aim, was voted the club’s Goal of the Season by supporters come the end of the campaign.
Having started Wolves’ opening two Premier League matches of this term, Nunes missed Saturday’s clash with Everton through suspension, and now moves to the Etihad in a permanent move.
Sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “I was disappointed with how it ended, it wasn’t necessary the stance Matheus took, but we ended with a good resolution for everyone. Matheus is a hugely talented player but would admit that last season he didn’t hit the heights he expected, but it was a tough season for the team, so maybe he wasn’t allowed to do that.
“We’ve lost a player with a lot of potential, a lot of ability, but the situation has led to us bringing a greater number of players in to improve the squad and provide competition in the group. The players here want competition in training, so while we’ve lost a good player, it’s made us a more competitive and better squad overall.”
