Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has left Wolves on a permanent basis, joining Championship side Millwall.
The 26-year-old moved to Wolves in July 2020, having left Aston Villa, and spent much of his time since gaining valuable experience during three loan moves away from Molineux.
A full Montenegro international, Sarkic spent time at Shrewsbury Town, before being named Birmingham City’s 2021/22 Player of the Season across the West Midlands.
His patience was rewarded at Wolves last season, as he made his senior debut against Preston North End in the Carabao Cup, before earning further cup appearances against Leeds United and Liverpool.
However, following the arrival of Dan Bentley in January, Sarkic signed a new contract at Wolves and then headed to Stoke City on loan, impressing enough to earn a permanent Championship move, this time to Millwall.
Sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “Firstly, this is a good move for Matija. He needs to find a home, rather than keep going out on loan, and start his career properly. He’s been great around to place, he’s a great person and a really talented goalkeeper, so now he needs a good run, injury free. We really hope he kicks on.
“Whenever you bring in a player, the ideal situation is you make money when they leave. We signed Matija for free and turned it into a transfer, along with bonuses and a sell on percentage, so it’s great business for us and a great move for him. Everyone’s happy and he goes with our best wishes.
“What we’ve developed in recent years is helping our young players have careers in the game. It’s not just about business, it’s about doing the right thing by our players, and if we keep creating careers in the game, then business takes care of itself. Not everyone can make it here, but if we can provide them with the platform to succeed, everything else falls into line.”
