Nunes | 'We have to fight like we did today'

Matheus Nunes insists Wolve must take heart from the “spirit and courage” this showed in victory over Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

The Portuguese’s first goal for the club was a stunner and worth its weight in gold, as it created breathing room on the Premier League’s bottom three for the old gold. Nunes’ performance inspired others too, as Wolves dug deep for a first win in four matches, increasing confidence at the ideal time, with the final eight fixtures on the horizon between now and May.

On easing the situation

“We need every point we can get, either a draw or a win, we need the points and we’re just going to work hard to get them. It gives us confidence, they are a very good team, but we have eight finals until the end of the season, and we have to fight like we did today.”

On a stunning goal

“In the moment I only thought about shooting, I didn’t think about anything else and luckily it went in.”

On the need to get a win

“It was very good, not only because of the win, but for the spirit and the courage. We were playing against a very good team, a very talented as a collective and individuals, but I think we did very well.

“His message [Lopetegui] every game is different. We always want to win, and I think we did well. I think we had it [urgency] already, in every game, every game is like a final for us.”

On doing it without Neves

“Of course, he’s our captain and a very important player for the team. Not only because of his skill inside the pitch, but also the spirit he puts on the team. But we have a lot of good players, and we did very well today, hopefully next week will be the same.”

On losing his insoles this week

“We had an open training, where all the fans came to watch us, and one kid from the stands asked for my boots. I have personalised insoles and I only remembered after I gave the boot. After that, the kit man was asking because I don’t have another one.”
