Davis | On Carabao Cup approach, facing Leeds and Lopetegui's appointment

Steve Davis insists he will be looking at putting out the ‘strongest possible team’ he can in the Carabao Cup clash with Leeds United on Wednesday night, while keeping an eye on fitness ahead of Saturday’s visit of Arsenal.

The Premier League leaders head to Molineux at the weekend, but with a place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at stake before then, Davis said his side will be keeping their approach the same as any other game as they look to reach the next stage of the competition.

On turning attention to the cup

“Our approach is always the same, which is to get a good result and win the game, and the Carabao Cup will be no different. We’re trying to approach it in the right way, but we’ve also got to bear in mind that we’re coming off the back of Brighton at the weekend, and we’ve got Arsenal coming up on Saturday.

“We’ll have to look at the strongest possible team we can put with Saturday also in mind. But our approach won’t change, whatever the competition or whatever the situation is.

“Whether it’s the Carabao, the FA Cup or the Premier League, we know we want to win the game and we will do everything we can to try to win the game and get through.”

On the threat Leeds pose

“If you look at the DNA that runs right the way through their club and academy, all the Leeds teams play with high energy and high intensity, so we know exactly what to expect.

“They’re a very direct team with their approach, in the way they run with the ball, the way they travel and the way they look to play balls through, while trying to break you down.

“They’ve got their strengths and they’ve got good players, so we can’t underestimate them, but you can’t underestimate any team in this league because they’re all tough games. They come here off a bit of form having turned their last few games around, so we know it’s going to be another tough game.”

On bouncing back from Saturday

“We’ve analysed it ourselves again, looked at certain situations and we saw that a lot of our play was good. We competed well, we fought for everything and I felt we defended well with 10-men and we were hard to break down.

“We all felt we deserved at least a point out of the game, with the way we fought and the good football we played – the first goal from Goncalo was excellent, but we know the areas which we need to improve.

“The goals we conceded last weakened could all have been prevented, and our defending wasn’t good enough, but that’s the most frustrating thing. Especially on Saturday, I felt that if we could have avoided those mistakes, we’d have got something from the game.”

On tightening up the defence

“It was that little bit of composure around our defending which proved to be the difference. When Brighton came near our box, we were panicking, but at those times it’s vitally important to remain calm and be in control of the situation.

“We need to be more ruthless around the box, so we don’t get into the situation to give those opportunities away. What we’ve seen recently is that teams aren’t necessarily opening us up, it’s just that we’ve made some very simple mistakes, as a team and individually, which we need to get better and more consistent at dealing with.”

On Lopetegui’s appointment

“All of the staff are equally delighted as the supporters with the appointment and we look forward to seeing what he will bring to the club.

“He’s a high calibre coach with a lot of experience of working in international football and with top clubs in Europe and that’s going to be invaluable for us. He and his team will come here with a job to do and, from my point of view as a coach and as a fan, it’s a very exciting appointment.

“He will get the utmost support from myself, James and everyone else within the football club, and I look forward to meeting him later this week.”
