Lage | On deserving more, Sa's heroics and Molineux return

Bruno Lage was left frustrated at Wolves’ lack of bite in front of goal having seen his side settle for a point against Fulham in Molineux’s opening game of the 2022/23 season.

Despite creating several opportunities, Wolves were unable to find the back of the net, and had to rely on Jose Sa’s penalty save from Aleksandar Mitrovic to keep the game all square. But playing back in front of the Wolves supporters with an attacking style was pleasing for the head coach.

On failing to score

“It’s frustrating because we didn’t score. I think we deserved to win because we created chances to score goals, but It’s almost like living everything again and again. That’s the way, but we need to continue to work.

“I think once again we did a great performance, but how many times do we have the players in front of the goalkeeper and no players in front of the goal to score goals. But this is football. Like in the beginning of last season, I was not worried because I could see the team were growing up, and one more time I’m not worried because I can see we play good football and the goals will come.

“It’s not easy, and it wasn’t easy today with the opponent. They have a top manager and with the way they won the Championship and the way they started the season, it wasn’t an easy opponent, but we did a good performance, which was more important for us.

On being tight at the back

“That’s the balance that we need to grow up as a team. During the last season we started with three games, no goals and no points, and this one, we can score a little bit, but it’s not enough, we just have one goal and one point, but I want more.

“But if we cannot score goals, at least we cannot concede or give chances to the opponent and I don’t remember an opportunity for Fulham to score in the second-half, but then we give away a penalty and a great chance to score a goal.

“In the end, what we look for what we did all the game, I think we should have had the three points, but there comes a time when we need to have emotional control, especially in the last 15 minutes because the game was balanced, and in that moment, I think we had more strength and fitness than the opponent.

“We don’t need to run as a crazy team, but play our game, be in the moment, keep control of the ball, of the positions, of the emotions and the goal will come, while we can’t concede chances and spaces for the opponent.”

On Sa’s penalty save

“Jose is doing a fantastic job. Last week, he was unhappy with the first goal and now he saved one penalty for the team. We have a lot of trust in Jose and that’s the most important thing.”

On playing back at Molineux

“We work for them and the players work hard for them. They run all day for them and you can see it in the effort that we did. We did 97 minutes with a good tempo, so we prepared very well in the pre-season to be fit and to be ready, and in that situation, we cannot say anything about the players, and the fans see that.

“That’s what I want; I want the chemistry between the players and the fans and the fans and the players – it should be like this, every time support and the players work like today for the fans.”

On Mitrovic’s challenge on Gibbs-White

“I really didn’t see the images. When you stop a transition, like he did, it should be a yellow card, but I need to see the images and understand how he stopped it, because if he kicked Morgan, then it’s not a stop, it’s a kick, so it’s not a yellow card, it’s a red card.

“But if he just stopped it with a normal foul, then it’s a foul and just a yellow card. So, I have to see it.”
