Kilman | On Alaves stunner, a positive training camp and preparing for the season

Maximilian Kilman admits he didn’t know what was going through his head as he scored a stunner during Wolves’ pre-season friendly against Deportivo Alaves in Alicante.

The defender – who is still recovering from injury which put him out of the final few months of last season – raced 70 yards down the pitch, taking on players left and right before aiming a drive into the bottom corner of the net to help Wolves to an impressive 4-0 win.

Kilman then had a longer run-out against Besiktas during Saturday evening’s 3-0 win over Besiktas, and with the players now back at Compton Park ahead of a final outing to Portugal at the weekend before the 2022/23 Premier League campaign gets underway, the 25-year-old has reflected on another positive training camp.

On his stunning goal against Alaves

“To be honest, I don’t know [what was going through his head]. I just felt a big gap of space and just ran through and I just felt in the moment.

“I thought I could do something a bit more, and luckily, I got past my man and scored.

“I’ve seen a little bit [of the reaction on social media], but I don’t want to get too carried away. My main focus is defending, and that was just a little bonus. I’m more focused on my defending.”

On a positive Besiktas run-out

“It was very good. It was a difficult start, but we kind of got into it, and then the goals came and then we showed how good we are on the ball.

“I felt good. I’ve been out for a while, so it was good to get a few more minutes, I got 60 minutes, so I’m feeling good.”

On fans flying out to Alicante

“It’s amazing to see their support. To come all the way to Spain and they’re still cheering us on, it’s great to have them here.”

On team bonding in pre-season

“It’s very hot, to be fair. I’m not used to the hot weather, but I’m doing my best, but it’s been very good and has brought us together a lot.

“It’s great to be spending more time with the boys and hopefully we can build cohesion a bit better and go on from there.”

On being ready for the new season

“Definitely. We feel much better as a team and a lot stronger, so hopefully when the first game comes, we’ll all be ready.”
