Sarkic commits future to Wolves

Goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has signed a new three-year contract at Wolves ahead of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

The stopper joined Wolves in 2020, and after a pair of successful loan spells away, will remain at Molineux as part of Bruno Lage’s first-team this coming season.

The 24-year-old already has wide experience in the game, having spent his youth career with both Anderlecht in Belgium and Aston Villa, before his move across the West Midlands two years ago.

Already a senior international for Montenegro by that point, Sarkic took his cap tally from one to five last season, while flourishing on loan in the Championship, having already impressed at League One level with Shrewsbury Town across the 2020/21 campaign.

At St Andrew's, Sarkic excelled and, despite missing half of the season through injury, went on to be named Supporters’ Player of the Season, after keeping ten clean sheets in his 23 appearances across the West Midlands.

Technical director Scott Sellars said: “Since he’s been with us, Matija has progressed really well, thriving in League One, and the same in the Championship, where before his injury his record was as good as any goalkeeper – if he’d have carried on in the same vein, he’d have been one of the best in the league.

“At Birmingham, his clean sheet record was excellent. Matt Jackson, myself and Tony Roberts watched him live a lot and we were very impressed with how he improved weekly. He became more composed at the level and before his injury was looking like a like a top Championship goalkeeper.

“This season he’ll stay with the first-team and compete with Jose Sa. He has his international football as well and he’s in a really good place to progress.”

Since 2017, Sarkic has completed six loan spells away, in non-league, the Scottish Premier League and across the EFL, which has developed the 24-year-old’s career, and since joining Wolves, Sellars has been pleased with how the past two years have panned out.

“All the time, we’re trying to get goalkeepers out on loan and expose them to competitive football, whether that’s in non-league, the EFL or abroad, and you want them to never find their level.

“We saw Matija’s potential when we signed him, and you’re looking at where he’s going to be, and the plan has worked out pretty well so far. He’s done everything he can, and as a club we’ve given him every opportunity to really progress, and he’s taken it.”
