Neves | 'We need to be proud of ourselves for what we did'

Ruben Neves was pleased Wolves drew a line under the 2022/23 campaign with a positive performance, even if points failed to follow at Anfield on Sunday.

Wolves stunned their title-chasing hosts with a third minute opener and kept the Reds level for much of the afternoon, before falling to two late goals on Merseyside. The old gold had passed up countless openings to add to Pedro Neto’s strike before Liverpool turned the tide, but Neves, who capped a stunning personal campaign with a brilliant performance in the middle, was highlighting the positives when speaking post-match.

On the performance at Liverpool

“I think we did a really good game. I think we had the main chances of the game. It’s really hard to come to Liverpool and, to be honest, we had five or six chances to score. We didn’t score, we knew they’d come for us and would want to score, and they did it. It’s a hard one to take because we played really well here, but that’s football.”

On being involved in the occasion

“We had this experience once already, my first season in the Premier League it was like it, they were fighting for the title as well. It’s really noisy every time we play here at Anfield, and especially today. It’s the Premier League, the Premier League’s a beautiful league to play, and I think we need to be proud of ourselves for what we did.”

On finishing in tenth

“We need to improve. It’s every time about improving and looking to get a better position next year. Last season we struggled a lot in the Premier League, this season we did really well and only struggled in the last month. In the Premier League, when you don’t win, the other teams will go for you and pass you.

“It’s a beautiful league to play and a really hard league as well, so you need to take your chances. This season we had a few chances to step up, we didn’t do it, so it’s our fault, we need to look at it and improve for the next one.”

On adapting to Lage’s style this term

“It’s a different style of game, that’s the main thing, different coaches. Everyone has his own style, his own view of the game, and I think we showed we changed a lot from Nuno to Bruno. I think we tried to have more of the ball, and we showed that during the season. We had a lot of chances to step up in the league, we didn’t, and I think we proved again what kind of game we want to play.

“We had a lot of moments in the game, where we put Liverpool to chase the ball. I think we did really well and that’s the image we want the people to see of us every time. Play offensively, but when we need to defend, we’re really good at it.”
