Roberts | Snatching last-gasp point at Chelsea 'was unbelievable'

Tony Roberts praised the ‘sheer determination’ of Conor Coady to be in the right place at the right time to earn Wolves a deserving point on the road at Chelsea.

Despite snatching a last-minute goal at Stamford Bridge having found themselves two goals down with 15 minutes of the game remaining, the goalkeeping coach – who was stepping in for head coach Bruno Lage after the head coach tested positive for Covid so missed the trip to London – believed his side should have taken all three points back to Wolverhampton, if their missed chances would have found their way on target.

On snatching a late point

“It was unbelievable. We’ve come back from 2-0 down and nicked a point. We came back to get the point but we're disappointed we didn't win it with the chances we had.

“We had a few good opportunities from set-pieces in the first-half, and then in the second-half, we’ve come out and the substitutions have changed the game. The boss communicated with us the changes he wanted to make, and it’s worked.

“For the last 15 minutes, we went through them, we attacked them and the boys think we could have got all three points. But this group has great spirit and you can see here how hard they work for each other all season, so to comeback from 2-0 down here – what a result.”

On taking Chelsea all the way

“In the first-half, we had a few good chances, Neto went through, Leo should have scored, but this team are a very decent team.

“They work hard, they keep going and to come here to the reigning European champions and the FA Cup finalists next weekend, it’s a massive achievement for the boys.”

On Coady’s fourth goal of the season

“It’s sheer determination to get in the box at the end of the game. We’re pushing for a goal and the spirit of the boys to go and attack teams when we need to, it’s great.

“I was just watching the build-up play to get the ball to Chiquinho and for Conor’s movement to get into the box and get on the end of it was unbelievable.

“It’s all credit to him because he’s our skipper, he’s our leader and he leads by example.”

On the impact of the substitutes

“It was a great goal by Trincao. A hell of a finish. We see that in training every day, he just needs to do it more often in games.

“Chiquinho’s came on and the ball he put in for the last goal was tremendous, he’s just put it on Coady’s head and if he misses from there then he’s in trouble, but what a cross!

“The three of them who came on had pace and attacked them and we well deserved the point.”

On coping without Lage

“He was in touch with Alex [Silva, assistant coach] and Carlos [Cachada, fitness coach] and we had a bit of a chat at half-time over the phone, but he is very happy, as you can imagine but also disappointed that we came here and we didn't get the three points.

“There was a bit of a situation with one of the subs, but we got there in the end. Sometimes it was a bit confusing to know what was going on and it was harder over the phone, but it was clear in the end and we got the result with the three subs all having an impact.

“They were in constant touch in Portuguese, but the messages got through and we came away with a point. Hopefully he’ll be back on Wednesday night because we need him. He’s our leader and he’s watched it from the training ground today, but the hotseat is too hot!”

On Wolves’ European hopes

“We want to get to Europe. We’ve still got a chance, so that’s the thing now, we want to get as high as we can, but obviously we’ve got three tough games coming up, two at home and one away, and if we show that effort and energy, passion and desire to get three points from them, then we’ve got every chance.

“We want to get into Europe again because these boys have been there before, and we want to go there again and experience that again. We have a big game on Wednesday so we need that spirit and hard work rate if we want to continue again.”
