In a month where Wolves pushed the Premier League’s top three all the way, drew with second-placed Chelsea and won at Brighton & Hove Albion, there were many impressive performers.
Wolves conceded just two goals in their five December matches – an injury time winner to Liverpool and penalty at Manchester City – so it’s little surprise the presence of Wolves’ defensive stars in the nominations.
Jose Sa, Conor Coady, Maximilian Kilman, Romain Saiss and Ruben Neves are all up for the award, and only Saiss is receiving a nomination for the first time this season.
The highlight of Sa’s fine month came against Chelsea, when he brilliantly denied Christian Pulisic to secure the draw, which has helped him to an 80.3% save percentage – a Premier League best.
Directly in front of Sa for all five games was his captain Coady, who attracted plaudits for his brilliant goalline clearance against Liverpool, his eight clearances in the same game and seven against league leaders Manchester City.
Continuing his 100 per cent record in the monthly nominations is Kilman, who had another brilliant month, providing a composed figure in possession, but also making 14 crucial blocks during December.
The third piece of the defensive line is Saiss and the victory at Brighton belonged to the Moroccan. He scored the winning goal with a well-taken volley, smashed the post with another attempt and made nine clearances to help his team to victory.
Finally, dictating games in the middle of the park has been Neves. He provided a stunning assist for Saiss’ Brighton winner and made 202 passes in the four games he featured in during December.
