Saiss | On festive goals, earning a point and taking positives

Romain Saiss was pleased to extend his record of scoring for Wolves in their first match following Christmas Day, having helped his side to take a late point against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Moroccan’s header in the 86th minute earned Wolves a deserved draw at Molineux, but Saiss believes that his teammates are disappointed to have not taken more from the game, having created numerous chances to score without hitting the back of the net.

On another festive goal

“First of all, I’m happy to score. The coach asked me before the game to get to the near post on the set-pieces, I did it a lot of times and I’m happy to score at the end.

“Whether it’s the 27th or the 27th it doesn’t matter, so of course I’m happy to score.”

On taking a point from Spurs

“I think we can be a little bit disappointed because we started the game by conceding a poor goal. We can avoid these kinds of goals and after that it’s harder when you play against teams like Tottenham to come back.

“The game was good, we controlled the game, I think we started the first two or three minutes not very well. We conceded a poor goal and a goal we can avoid, but after that we stayed focused on the game, we stayed compact and organised and created a lot of chances.

“I think we deserved more today. We deserved the win with the way we played, and there was a lot of positives from the game.

“We created more chances than them, we kept the ball more than them, so I think we played really well today, but unfortunately we have to score one or two more goals because we have the chances to score and we didn’t do it.

“But I think we controlled the game, even though we scored, I think we deserved more because we created a lot of chances today and we scored only one goal.”

On Silva’s late opportunities

“It’s the end of the game, it demands a lot, he helped the team a lot, but he’s a young player and he knows he has to improve and impress and I am sure he is going to score a lot of goals for this club.

“But you cannot demand the same things as Raul gives to us from Fabio, for example. But for an 18-year-old, he’s doing really well and he played really well today against one of the best defences in the league.

“But I think we had a lot of chances, not only Fabio, but we have to be more clinical to score goals.”

On switching formations

“We were a bit surprised because they played with a different shape today, they played with three at the back and we played with four defenders.

“I think we controlled the game except the first minute, when we were not focused for half a second, it was a goal. We have to improve and we have to be consistent all the game, for all 90 minutes, to be a strong team in this league.”

On taking positives into United match

“Even if we are a bit disappointed, I think we have a lot of positives things to take from this game. We played very well against one of the teams this season in the league.

“We’re going to keep the positive things to go to Manchester to make a good result. We have a good mentality and we have to keep it for the next few games.

“We want to compete against all the teams in this league and we showed today that we are ready to compete against the big teams. We have missed a lot of players, but the players who have come in have showed that they are ready to play and it’s good for the team and for everybody.”
