Neto | 'I love being here'

Pedro Neto was overjoyed to have signed a new five-year contract as he commits his long-term future to his ‘amazing’ Wolves family.

The 20-year-old has had an outstanding first year at Molineux, cementing himself as a key member of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad – as well as a joker in the dressing room, but the Portuguese forward is not resting on his laurels and insists he will continue to improve each day to achieve his goal to become the best player he can be.

On signing a new five-year deal

“It’s been amazing being here. I love being here; the family that we are building, all the club, it’s been fantastic for me, so I’m very happy.

“This new deal shows I’m working very hard and I was expecting it because I worked for it. I always work to improve my game, so it comes with that. I work hard every day, so I’m very happy about it, but I will continue to work now.

“We say that nothing is given to you, so you have to work hard and what I have done in the last year-and-a-half is work hard every day, continue to improve and learn from my teammates.”

On a successful first season at Molineux

“What I enjoy the most is the locker room and the time that we have together. It’s very special because I’m always laughing.

“They know that I am always joking with them, so they joke with me and I think it’s the most beautiful thing about this team.

“On the pitch, the moments that I remember a lot are the victories against Manchester City and Southampton.

“I remember that we came back from these two games and it shows how we are and how I enjoy the game, because the football is about that – we were losing the two games and with our mentality we won those games, and it was unbelievable.”

On continuing to improve

“In my first interview, I said that I want to be the best, so I have to work every day because I have to compete with my teammates in a healthy way. I have to compete to play, to improve, and day by day I try to learn something.

“It’s been very good to be here and learn a lot with the coach, with my teammates, with everyone, and I will keep improving.

“I think it’s the good thing about this team, because we all think the same way, we’re like a pack, like we say, so we work all to the same goals, all of us try to improve every day, because the way that we play is to improve. It’s the mentality of the team and the mentality of the players that are taking this club to a higher level.”

On growing in stature

“When I arrived, I had some difficulties because I was a little bit small compared to the other players, but I changed a lot.

“Not only during the quarantine, but I tried to work my body since I arrived and it was the hard part because for your muscles to grow you have to have pain before you gain something. This is the part that fans don’t see, but I work every day to show them that I am improving.

“I am growing, I am learning a lot, because here we have very experienced players, like Joao [Moutinho], who is the old guy. I learn a lot from him, from [Conor] Coady, from Rui [Patricio], because they know more than me about football.

“They have more experience than me, so I try to learn little things from them that are important and how to be smart in the game.

“I think I’ve improved a lot; I improved the way that I used my body and I improved the way I read the game defensively, so it’s been very good for me.”

On his aims for the next five years

“We go day by day; improving, working and letting things happen naturally, but I know what I want to achieve. I want to be the best.

“But I don’t think in the future, because the future depends on what you do in the present, so work every day, learning everything, little things day by day, and I will continue that.”
