Podence looking forward to Olympiacos reunion

One man who knows everything about what Wolves will be facing when Olympiacos arrive at Molineux this time next week is Daniel Podence.

The Portuguese winger, who came to the national conscience of English football fans after a stunning display for Olympiacos against Tottenham Hotspur in this season's Champions League group stages, spent 18 months of his career in the red and white of the Greek champions before moving to Wolves in January.

Although the pocket rocket is excited to be reuniting with his former teammates and friends in Wolverhampton for the delayed Europa League second leg, he is determined to help his current side progress to the quarter-finals.

On playing for Olympiacos

“Going to a club which received me so well was very good for me because my mind was very relaxed at the time.

“Playing for a club like Olympiacos are, I enjoyed a lot and they did a great job with me.”

On making an impression in the Champions League against Spurs

“It was a great game. Tottenham were in a difficult moment, but they still had a lot of great players and a great coach.

“Every game against them is very difficult, but we did a great game and we could have won, but we drew 2-2. Also, in London, we were winning 2-0, but we lost 4-2.

“It’s very difficult to understand these two games, but now I’m here and people know me better.”

On facing his former teammates

“It’s a very difficult situation because, in other times, it would be very exciting to play them because of the environment and the atmosphere.

“Now I think, ‘OK, I will play my ex-teammates and my old friends’, but without the environment and crowd in the stadium, it’s just another game.

“Obviously, I know them because I played with them for two years, but I don’t know if it will be strange or normal, but I’ll really enjoy this game.”

On understanding the Olympiacos challenge.

“It will be very difficult. I wasn’t surprised that they played very well in the first game. Some of my colleagues may have been surprised as they played really well and touched the ball with quality, controlling the game – even with one less man for some time.

“I wasn't surprised because I know I used to be in such a good team, that played well against Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Arsenal, as well as the teams in the Greek championship.

“I’m completely aware of the quality of their team, but I also see we can beat them if we think in the right way. We can control the game and show our quality.”
