The midfielder was robbed of the winter period due to a back problem but returned from a three-month layoff against Manchester United in the Emirates FA Cup last month. Now, on the back of a warm-weather training camp in Marbella, Gibbs-White can’t wait to make up for lost time, starting against Leicester City on Friday night.
On returning to fitness
“The injury was tough to get through, but now I’m back, I’ve played a few games, played a game for the 23s, so my fitness is there and it’s all about trying to help this team out and trying to finish as high as we can.
“The whole Wolves team - the staff, the players - they’ve all been there for me and helped me get through it. I feel like the main person that was there for me was my Dad and my family back home, because I could go home to them and let my frustration out.
“They understand where I was coming from because they know me, and they could see how frustrated I was not playing football. I feel like that’s the worst thing as a football player, not being able to put your boots on every day and go outside and play football.”
On being together in Marbella
“I think that sums us up as a team - we are a pack. I feel like the manager wanted work to be done, so instead of being in the freezing cold England, he took us to Marbella to give us a chilled sort of break, but still at the same time working hard.
“I feel like it’s good because some clubs might be coming back a bit unfit, but we’ve maintained that and hopefully we can kick-on on Friday and put in a good performance. We trained every day and then some afternoons.”
On last season’s Leicester win
“I remember coming on and Leicester equalised, so I was kicking myself. Luckily enough, I won a header and then Ruben played a beautiful ball to Raul and then we scored on that counter-attack – it was one of the craziest games I’ve played in in the Premier League so far.”
On Leicester’s season so far
“You have to take your hat off to them for what Brendan has done and what the team has done this season. They have a young team and it’s very talented, but I feel like we have the desire and hard work to pull through in the game.
“I feel like we’re one of the most organised teams in the league, so we’ll be going into this game with confidence, wanting to win the game, but bearing in mind it’s going to be a tough game because of how Leicester play.”
