Nuno on improving in 2020 and rejuvenated Watford

Nuno Espirito Santo believes Wolves can continue to improve into 2020 after another stellar year at the helm of the club in 2019.

Under Nuno’s stewardship in the 12 months, Wolves have reached an FA Cup semi-final for the first time since 1999, earned a seventh-place finish in the Premier League, qualified for major European competition after a 40-year absence and taking the club on their longest unbeaten run in the top-flight since 1962 to finish the year in seventh position in the Premier League table.

But despite the team’s successes, Nuno insists there is still ‘a lot of space’ for Wolves to improve in 2020 as they begin the year with another match against last season’s FA Cup and league rivals Watford.

On progressing in 2020

“I truly believe that we have a lot of space to improve because the way and how we do things, we have a small squad, we have a very small squad and the players involved are basically the same that were involved last season.

“If we can improve our performance at the same time, now the transfer window is open, try to bring things that the team clearly needs, different characteristics, there’s a lot of space to improve. I truly believe it.”

On a rejuvenated Watford

“Of course, you can see [the improvement]. Now we will start thinking about Watford and we can get the games analysed, but it’s evident that they are a good team who are going to be very tough.

“Like you say, there was a reaction [since Nigel Pearson came in] and things are improving, but every game in the Premier League, especially in this schedule, is very tough.”

On challenges the Hornets pose

“They were tough last year, but also this season too. We played them earlier this season and it was a very tough game.

“We have to rest, we have to recover well and prepare ourselves to compete in the best way that we can.”
