"We showed fighting spirit," says Dendoncker

Although disappointed to pick up just one point, Leander Dendoncker was pleased with the fighting spirit of Wolves against Southampton.

The hosts fought back to earn a point through Raul Jimenez’s penalty, overcoming the disappointment of two VAR decisions and Saints’ opening goal. However, not for the first time this season, Wolves came together and showed the team spirit in the group, which is going to be crucial moving forward, insists Dendoncker.

On showing character

“I think we showed our fighting spirit, we stayed together and that’s important, so I don’t think we gave up after the goal we conceded. We just kept on playing and tried to look for opportunities and they came and we scored eventually so that’s positive.

“It’s better than a loss. That would have been worse of course. One point is okay so we have to keep going and now we have a lot of games coming up and we will have to be ready.”

On the recovering from VAR decisions

“It was a strange game. We started well. We tried to press forward and to play forward. With a couple of chances also on goal got cancelled again for one foot offside, unfortunately, but those are the new rules I guess.

“It’s a big difference. I think the first one was a clear handball from Raul so we cannot complain about that but the one after that is just one foot so, okay, we can do nothing about it.”

On breaking down Southampton

“I think they did it well, they were well-organised and they were playing on the counter attack as well and they did it well. It’s a good team, a tough team.”
