Asia Trophy win a boost for Neves

Ruben Neves believes victory in the Asia Trophy will help carry a winning mentality into the new season with Wolves.

Wolves defeated Manchester City on penalties to lift the Asia Trophy on Saturday in the club’s final pre-season friendly before competitive football returns. The shootout victory provided the ideal conclusion to a successful pre-season trip to China and Neves returns to Wolverhampton positive ahead of the new campaign.

On the Man City victory

“Of course, we know Man City already. They are a really big team and play really well. We played well, very organised without the ball, trying to go on fast attacks when we could. Fortunately, we won the tournament.

“It was a big different, of course (to the Newcastle game). We know City are a team that likes to have the ball all the game. We had to prepare ourselves for that, but I think we did it well and we are happy to win.”

On a successful tournament

“It was a great tournament for us, playing against very good teams. I think we’ve prepared ourselves good and now we’re thinking of the first official match in the Europa League.

“The winning feeling is what gives you motivation for the future. We’ve won our first tournament, it was a friendly tournament, but we won it and it’s very good for us and the club.”

On the young lads

“They did a fantastic job with us. I think we have to congratulate them because it’s hard to play against this kind of team and they did it really well against Newcastle and City. They are helping us a lot in our job, so thank you to all the boys.”

On the week in China

“It was a great week for us. Far from our country, but there’s a lot of support here too. I think we are improving and now we’re thinking of the Europa League and now I don’t need to ask, I know the stadium will be full and I’m sure we’ll do our best to win.”
