Internationals | Jimenez begins Gold Cup campaign

Raul Jimenez and Mexico get their 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign underway in the early hours of Sunday morning, with their first match coming against Cuba from 2.30am.

Wolves’ top goalscorer last season – who will be the only Premier League player to feature at the tournament – will hope to get back among the goals for his country, who he captained for the first time ever in their recent friendly victory over Venezuela.

Mexico will also face Canada and Martinique in the group stages of the biennial North and Central American competition, where the top two sides from each of the four groups progress into the quarter finals.

Connor Ronan and his Republic of Ireland under-21 side fell at the semi-final stages of the 2019 Toulon Tournament after going down 2-0 to Brazil.

The midfielder played 66 minutes of his side’s defeat but will hope to be back in action on Saturday afternoon as Ireland face Mexico for the second time in the competition as part of the third-place play-off.

Romain Saiss was in international action this week playing for Morocco as the team prepared for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations competition with a friendly against Gambia.

Starting at centre-back, Saiss played the first 45 minutes for his country – who fell to a 1-0 defeat – before being taken off at half-time for Nordin Amrabat.

Morocco will get their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign underway in Egypt on Sunday 23rd June, with a first group match against Namibia from 3.30pm.

Elsewhere this week, both Leander Dendoncker and Matt Doherty were unused substitutes in the Euro 2020 qualifiers for Belgium and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

Dendoncker was on the bench for the Belgium Red Devil’s 3-0 wins over Kazakhstan and Scotland, while Doherty failed to appear for Mick McCarthy’s side in their 1-1 draw with Denmark and Ireland’s 2-0 win over Gibraltar.
