Commitment for the cause delights Nuno

Wolves’ victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday was a reward for grit and determination, according to Nuno Espirito Santo.

The head coach watched his players defend resolutely, with bravery and commitment, and they were rewarded when Matt Doherty’s moment of quality won them the points at the other end.

It’s Wolves fourth clean sheet in six matches and adds value to the organisation and shape Nuno has drummed into his players since day one.

“It's the beginning of everything a clean sheet. This way you are always closer to winning the game, as long as you do your tasks and defend well.

“Crystal Palace had chances, it’s impossible to avoid, but the goalkeeper is there to try and save it and we had bodies in front of the ball. The players adjusted themselves and changed how they press.

“Crystal Palace were stronger at the start of the game and created us a lot of problems, but from the moment we adjusted some details, we were better and in the second half we did really good.”

Doherty’s strike was his first of the season, after two assists during September, and Nuno was delighted with his contribution, as well as that of all his player.

“Matt was one of the players last season who made the most minutes. He can improve but he did OK and scored goals last season, so he’ll try to repeat it. Matt has been doing his job since last season.

“It doesn’t matter who scores, it’s important we achieve what we want. We competed well and won against a very tough team in a tough stadium to play.”

Wolves made Premier League history for naming an unchanged starting line-up for their opening eight games of the season, but Nuno is delighted with his whole squad going into the international break.

“If you play and train with the same team mates, with routines, it will become easier and more effective. At the same time, I’m pleased with the squad and there are other options.

“Every game we look at the options we have. All the squad knows their task, the individual task in the shape of the team. It’s the same performance and consistency.

“The moment to change will happen naturally but we have a squad and are ready.”
