A Big Well Done

Nuno Espirito Santo hailed his players’ performance as they battled to a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

Ruben Neves’ accurate first half strike was enough for the visitors to take all three points in a tough game where both teams had chances.

Speaking after the game, Nuno praised his side’s commitment and work ethic.

He said: “It was very, very tough. I think everybody saw that but I think it was deserved. The first half was more of the team that we want to be, we controlled the game and had good moments of football with good combinations.

“The second half was a physical game. Sheffield, of course, risked everything with big guys in the box.

“We struggled for moments because they were on top of us.

“We have to recognise in the moments that we don’t control the game that we have to stick together, we have to defend well.

“To defend the way we defended against such a difficult situation that Sheffield created, it takes a lot of quality and a lot of character so it’s a big well done to the boys.”

The Head Coach felt that the final pass just wasn’t there for Wolves going forward in the second half to earn a second goal.

But the team’s defensive work meant that the single goal was enough to secure victory.

“I don’t think John Ruddy made a save and this shows the way we defend, the way the players put their bodies between the ball and our goal.

“This shows a lot. It’s not just about talent and quality, what supports everything is the way that you have a clean sheet, the way you support each other and react to the loss of possession.

“The way you keep the shape, the way you run back, this is football.

“We should have done better. The way we go out and create situations like 3 v 3, I think we should make better decisions.

“There are moments where we should do better. In the second half, the last pass was missing. I think we should have done better in the last third.

“This is the process, not every game is going to be the same. I thought we fought well and worked for our fans who were here behind the goal supporting us all the way.

“They were fantastic. They came all the way on a night like this and stayed until the end. Supporting right through, knowing the team were suffering on the pitch.

“I thank them for coming and I’ll never get tired of this. Together we are stronger.”
