Neves reflects on a mission accomplished

Ruben Neves believes Wolves’ first season back in the Premier League represents a “mission accomplished” after seventh place was secured.

The midfielder was the stand-out performer in last season’s promotion-winning campaign and has continued to impress in the top flight, in the heart of a side which has been so consistent. A strong showing, if not result, against Liverpool on the final day provided plenty of positives to build on in the future and Neves will now reflect on another job well done in old gold and black.

On a successful season

“It’s been a tremendous year for the club. Tremendous for us, players, staff, all the fans, I think it was a great season. We achieved seventh place in our first year in the Premier League, it’s not easy, it means that we worked really hard and fortunately we gave this for our fans that’ve helped us a lot during all the season.

“We have the feeling of mission accomplished. We did a great season, with good and bad moments, but always with the focus on our goal. We achieved seventh place in Premier League, which is great result for a team that came from Championship.

“Two years ago we started at Championship. This year we moved to the Premier League and we already showed that we have the capacity to fight for the highest places. That should continue to be our goal - improve every day.”

On a good showing at Anfield

“It was a difficult game. We all know what Liverpool is, how Liverpool play, but I think we did a great game. We lost 2-0 but mainly in the second half we controlled really well the game. We had our chances to score, but Liverpool is a great team, they had a little bit more go and unfortunately we lost, but we left with a great performance I think.

“We knew before the game that they wanted to win, because they were fighting for a title, but I think we played like usual. Really good shape, very organised, waiting for the right moments to attack and I think we played well. Unfortunately, we didn’t score today, but mainly in the second half I think we made a great game.”

On Wolves’ impressive away following

“It’s been unbelievable. I think the best atmosphere that I’ve played in in England, at Molineux. I think it’s really difficult to play there, so thank you for the support, thank you all. I can’t wait for us again next season to do things well.”
