Injury update from head of medical Phil Hayward

With Jonny Otto injured on international duty for Spain two weeks ago, Wolves head of medical Phil Hayward provides an update on his progress.

It’s always disappointing to lose players to injury, particularly while on international duty, but we set about getting Jonny back to fitness as soon as he returned to Compton.

Jonny sustained an injury to his medial collateral ligament. He had it scanned in Spain and came back to us straight away to start the rehabilitation.

The first two weeks have been mainly focused on reducing inflammation around the knee and maintaining strength as much as possible.

Once the inflammation is under control, we’ll then start more treatments to begin healing the damaged area and progress his rehab to more functional exercises in the gym, prior to commencing outdoor rehab.

He needs to have good strength before he can be exposed to contact training, so we have various benchmarks that we need to attain before progressing onto the next level of rehab, getting closer to a return to training.

It’s difficult to put a timescale on his return because we need to respect the fact it needs to heal, but we’ll progress him as quickly as possible.
