Wolves and Budapest Honved reunite after 68 years

Wolves rekindled a historic rivalry on Wednesday, as the club’s under-18s and under-21s faced Budapest Honved in Bratislava.

The Old Gold previously met Honved over 68 years ago on 13 December 1954, when Wolves hosted the Hungarians at Molineux in a match which was instrumental in the eventual formation of the European Cup.

Wolves won 3-2 in front of a crowd of 55,000 under a new kind of floodlight, with Stan Cullis’ side coming from two goals down to claim victory.

At the time, Wolves were English champions and Honved had just won their fourth Hungarian league title with Ferenc Puskas and co.

However, this time, fixtures took place as part of 2023/24 preparations on the academy’s pre-season camp in Slovakia.

And it was Wolves who prevailed at their Samorin training base, with Owen Hesketh, Ethan McLeod and Justin Hubner all on the scoresheet as James Collins’ under-21s won 4-0 at X-Bionic Sphere.

Meanwhile, Richard Walker and his under-18s were also successful over their Honved counterparts after recording a 2-0 victory to end their time in the Slovakian capital on a high.
