Davis calling for improvements in FA Youth Cup

While admitting progressing in the FA Youth Cup is the important thing, Steve Davis has already identified areas for his under-18s side to improve on, following Wednesday’s victory over Salford City.

The Wolves youngsters, playing at Molineux for the first time in almost two years, showed their clinical streak in front of goal, with all three forwards finding the back of the net. However, Salford became involved in the scoring after the break and made life tough for Wolves at times, leaving head coach Davis wanting more from his players, particularly in the next round at Crystal Palace.

On the performance

“I was a bit of a party pooper after because I don’t think we played as well as we could have done. I thought we found some parts of the game quite difficult, playing against a team which sat off us first-half – I thought we could have made more of the ball.

“Our switches of play were excellent, and the penalty would have made a big difference of course, at 4-0 it’s even harder to get back, but we felt at 3-0 if they got that goal, they’d change because we could hear the manager having a go at half-time. They came quite strong and gave us a few problems, but cup games are about winning, however way you do it.”

On the strikers scoring

“They’ll be pleased. That’s what they’re there for, to get into good positions to score. They’ll be delighted they managed to get goals and it gives them confidence going into the next game.”

On playing at Molineux

“It’s been a while, with Covid it’s been a couple of years since we’ve been here, and the opportunity to play at Molineux is brilliant. When we had the meeting on Sunday, there wasn’t very many who’d played here. It was great to be here, it’s a fantastic stadium, and although we didn’t make as much noise as the Salford fans, we still enjoyed the evening.”

On looking for improvements

“We’ve got to be better. I don’t think we were as good as we can be with the talent we’ve got in the dressing room. They know that, if they’re honest, and I think there’s more to come. We’ll wait for the next round, probably mid-January, get them together and try work on the things we can be better at.

“They’re good lads, they churn results out and the cup is about getting through. We know we’ve got Palace in the next round, we know that’ll be a tough game from when we played them a few years ago, so we expect a tough game in the next round.”
