A surprise choice when appointed manager of Wolves in 1986, Turner proved to be the right man in the right place at the right time.

Many fans were not too happy to see him given the job when acting manager Brian Little seemed to be making some progress. However, Turner steered Wolves to the Fourth Division play-offs in his first season only to see them lose to Aldershot in the final. Wolves atoned by winning the title the following season, to make them the first club to win four sections of the Football League. They also won the Sherpa Van Trophy on a memorable day at Wembley. A year later Wolves were champions of the Third Division. Turner had many successful years as player and manager at Shrewsbury Town before a brief managerial spell with Aston Villa. At Molineux he made some astute early signings. None was better than the deal which brought Steve Bull and Andy Thompson from West Bromwich Albion. Although he did not take the club all the way back to the top flight, Turner’s role in Wolves’ revival is undeniable.
