Pereira | 'Everything can change'

Vitor Pereira hopes his players will be able to build on their Carabao Cup victory over Everton in midweek and finally pick up three elusive Premier League points away at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday evening.

Although he has a full squad available, question marks remain over the fitness of strikers Jorgen Strand Larsen and Tolu Arokodare – who opened his account in Old Gold off the bench against the Toffees last time out – but Pereira is confident his players have now had enough time on the training pitch to create the dynamics which are going to ‘build something strong’.

On having his whole squad available

“This is good, but it is a headache for me because to make the list for this game, everything in this moment is something that demands from me, decisions. With players who deserve to be in the first 11, and this is what it is, because we don’t have injuries. But this is important, and I prefer this kind of headache because now we have a full squad ready to help.

“I feel that the squad is more balanced than the last season because we have two players for each position and I believe that they need time to prove. This is the conversations I have with my players.

“It’s time to prove why they are in Premier League and why we select them from other leagues to this league. This is the time to prove, to be themselves, to feel comfortable, to play in the best level. And I believe this internal competition is good for us. I don't have any doubts that will increase our level in the next few weeks.”

On his centre-forward options

“We are trying to go step by step with [Strand Larsen]. Tomorrow, we’ll see his condition. He is not 100% in conditions for 90 minutes, but we must manage the time that he can play.

“[Arokodare] scored a beautiful goal and showed quality in the finishing and Tolu is getting his condition, his physical condition, because when he arrived, it was like we pushed him to play 90 minutes, or almost 90 minutes the first game.

“The second game we were pushing him too, because we didn't have alternatives to play for the position. But we know that he needs to get his conditions to be able to play 90 minutes, with intensity in this league.”

On capitalising on Everton win

“A good result brings confidence, brings smiles, good energy, and the last few days, we’ve worked well, preparing the game for tomorrow.

“We feel that to show the level of the players that we have in this moment, we need just something like this result, a win, and everything can change.”

On facing Tottenham on the road

“Tottenham is a different challenge. I believe if we are in conditions to play in two different systems [back five and back four], it’s better for us because we have the options to face different challenge, and Tottenham is a different challenge for us.

“But to be honest, I’m really only interested in my team in this moment, because we have to – and we need to – increase our level. The last game gave us some good signals, and we must keep working with our game, and with our work to increase the dynamics, the defending and the attacking – all those dynamics.

“We will face a strong team, with very good players, strong players, but if you start to look for the good things that the opponent team has, and you forget your team, it's better not to go there.

“I prefer to look for my team, to believe that we can perform, we can compete against them and try to do our best and try everything we can to win the game. We don't go there to try to draw, we’ll go there trying to win the game, because we need the points and we know they are quality, but we have quality too.”

On creating connections between his players

“Of course, there are concerns because you look at the table. I don't like to be in this position. Never in my life, this is the first time in my career that I’m in this position. But I know why the start was not the best in the way that we wanted.

“We faced some problems, especially when the players come late in the market. But now is the time that I feel they have started to create a connection between them, and you start to see different movements, different skills, different connections, different dynamics, and they create the dynamics between them. But this is the way, tactically and mentally to build something strong.”
