A Windrush Day special episode of Wolves Express is now live, after a new monument was unveiled in Wolverhampton this week.
On Monday – Windrush Day 2026 – crowds flocked to St Patrick’s Park to recognise the immense contribution made by the Windrush generation to the city over the past 78 years and we hear from the event on the latest podcast.
On the show is a trio of iconic Black players from Wolves’ past – Don Gardner, the club’s first ever Black player, George Berry, who was hugely successful and won the 1980 League Cup, and Joe Jackson, the club’s first Black player from the city.
Berry is based in Stoke, but enjoyed being back in Wolverhampton, reflecting on his early days in old gold and the treasured memories of the League Cup final, revealing how long the celebrations went on for on Express.
Gardner spoke of his privilege at being present at the monument unveiling, as well as his memories of Wolverhampton and Molineux, where he paved the way for other Black players.
Finally, Jackson touched on how the whole community came together for the event, the significance of the monument and how he now hopes other people will be able to get more educated on the Windrush generation.
Released regularly during the off-season, Wolves Express is packed with news, updates and exclusive interviews on both the playing and non-playing side of the club, complementing other offerings of the Official Wolves Podcast and Matchday Live Extra.
