McNamara | 'We’re massively disappointed'

Dan McNamara couldn’t hide his disappointment as Wolves Women were beaten by Halifax on Wednesday evening.

The 2-1 result brought an end to the Old Gold’s seven-game winning run, and manager McNamara believes the lack of clinical edge cost his side in their quest to finish third.

On reflections on the game

“I don’t think we were terrible, but we can’t finish and when you can’t finish you always give teams like Halifax an opportunity.

“Did they do enough to win the game? Yes. They scored two worldie goals on the turnover and we’ve got to be better at defending them.

“We dominate the game other than that but when you can’t put the ball in the back of the net, then those kind of results happen.

“We’re massively disappointed, it’s really poor from us. We’ve had upwards of 25 opportunities or box entries to put the game to bed – three of them came within the first six minutes.

“When you don’t take your chances, you always leave yourselves open to get sucker punched and that’s what certainly happened tonight.

“That opportunity to move into third has passed us by now and we’ve just got to regroup and go again ahead of the weekend.”

On heading into Sunday

“We want to win every game. I think that’ll take it out of the girls and I think it was a bit of a humbling.

“Maybe it’s been me. This week we’ve talked about potentially nicking that third place a little bit too much and not disrespecting Halifax, but maybe I’ve not prepared them as well as I potentially could’ve done.

“I’ll go away and reflect on that, but overall it’s hugely disappointing. The girls are devastated but credit to Halifax – that’s seven points off Newcastle, Forest and Wolves they’ve taken now. They’re obviously doing something right.”

On still having silverware to play for in the Challenge Cup final

“We want to make sure we try and finish the season with a little bit of silverware and that gives us a perfect opportunity to.

“Can we get a little bit of consistency with that by going into the weekend, but Liverpool Feds will prove just as tough, if not tougher according to the table.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re ready for that one and, ultimately, put right what’s gone wrong tonight.”
